How to play Contract Bridge

Objective

Bid a contract and then take at least that many tricks (plus six) as declarer, or defeat the opponents' contract.

Setup

  • Four players in two partnerships; 13 cards each.
  • The auction determines the contract: a level (1–7) and a strain (♣ ♦ ♥ ♠ or No Trump).

Rules

  1. Bids must be progressively higher; suits rank ♣ < ♦ < ♥ < ♠ < NT.
  2. Three consecutive passes end the auction. The first partner to name the final strain becomes declarer.
  3. After the opening lead, declarer's partner lays their hand face up as the dummy and declarer plays both hands.
  4. The contract requires 6 + the bid level in tricks.
  5. Making the contract scores below the line; overtricks and bonuses score above it.

Strategy tips

  • Count high-card points: A=4, K=3, Q=2, J=1. Around 26 combined points supports game.
  • Support your partner's suit with three or more cards.
  • As declarer, plan the whole hand before playing to trick one.
