How to play Cribbage
Objective
Be the first to peg 121 points around the board.
Setup
- Two players receive six cards each.
- Each discards two to the dealer's crib.
- A starter card is cut from the remaining deck.
Rules
- In "the play", players alternate cards, calling the running total; you may not exceed 31.
- During the play, score 2 for making 15 or 31, 2 for a pair, 6 for three of a kind, and points for runs.
- After the play, each hand is scored: 2 per combination summing to 15, 2 per pair, 1 per card in a run, 4-5 for a flush, and 1 for the Jack matching the starter suit ("nobs").
- The dealer also scores the crib. The deal alternates each hand.
Strategy tips
- Fives are gold — every face card makes fifteen with one.
- As dealer, keep good cards for the crib; as non-dealer, throw junk.
- In the play, leading a 4 avoids handing the opponent an easy fifteen.
