How to play Escoba

Objective

Score the most points from captures, sevens and sweeps.

Setup

  • A 40-card deck (Ace through 7 plus three court cards per suit).
  • Each player gets three cards; four cards go face up on the table.

Rules

  1. Court cards count 8, 9 and 10; number cards count their face value.
  2. On your turn, play one card. If it plus any combination of table cards totals exactly 15, you capture them all.
  3. If nothing sums to 15, your card stays on the table.
  4. Clearing the table entirely is an escoba, worth one point.
  5. At the end, score 1 point each for most cards, most coins, most sevens, and for holding the seven of coins.

Strategy tips

  • A 7 is the most flexible capture card — save it.
  • Avoid leaving two cards summing to 15 for your opponent.
  • Count how many sevens have gone; they decide close games.
