How to play Euchre
Objective
Be the first partnership to reach 10 points.
Setup
- A 24-card deck (9 through Ace) is used.
- Each player gets five cards; the next card is turned up as the proposed trump.
Rules
- In round one, players may order up the turned card as trump; in round two they may name any other suit.
- The Jack of trump is the right bower — the highest card. The other Jack of the same colour is the left bower and counts as a trump.
- The making side needs three tricks; taking all five scores 2.
- Getting fewer than three tricks after making trump is a euchre and gives the opponents 2 points.
- Going alone and taking all five tricks scores 4.
Strategy tips
- Both bowers plus one more trump is an easy call.
- Count the left bower as a trump, never as its printed suit.
- Going alone is worth it only with the right bower and a side Ace.
