How to play Oh Hell!

Objective

Score the most points by bidding your trick count exactly, every round.

Setup

  • Rounds start at one card each, increase to the maximum the deck allows, then decrease back to one.
  • One card is turned up to set trump; the final round is often played without trump.

Rules

  1. Every player bids the exact number of tricks they will take.
  2. The dealer may not bid a number that makes the total bids equal the number of tricks — someone must be wrong.
  3. Follow suit if possible.
  4. An exact bid scores 10 plus the number of tricks; a missed bid scores nothing (or a penalty in strict scoring).

Strategy tips

  • In one-card rounds, an Ace is a guaranteed trick and a 2 is a guaranteed miss.
  • Bidding zero is powerful when you're void in trump.
  • Watch the total bids — an under-bid round means extra tricks nobody wants.
