How to play Mahjong Solitaire

Objective

Remove every tile from the layout by matching identical free pairs.

Setup

• 144 tiles are arranged in a multi-layer layout.
• Tiles come in suits, honours, flowers and seasons.

Rules

1. A tile is free if nothing covers it and at least one of its left or right sides is open.
2. Match two identical free tiles to remove them.
3. Flower tiles match any other flower; season tiles match any other season.
4. You win when the board is empty.

Strategy tips

• Always clear the top layers first — they unlock the most tiles.
• Before matching a pair, check whether a third or fourth copy is buried beneath it.
• Use a shuffle when no free matches remain rather than restarting.
