How to play Backgammon
Objective
Move all fifteen of your checkers into your home board and bear them all off first.
Setup
- Twenty-four points; each player starts with fifteen checkers in the standard opening arrangement.
- Both players move in opposite directions.
Rules
- Roll two dice and move checkers that many points each; doubles are played four times.
- A point with two or more of your checkers is blocked to your opponent.
- Landing on a point with exactly one opposing checker hits it, sending it to the bar.
- A player with a checker on the bar must re-enter it before making any other move.
- Once all fifteen checkers are home, you may start bearing off.
Strategy tips
- Making points in your home board is usually better than running a single checker.
- Don't leave blots within direct-shot range of an opponent's checker.
- In a pure race, always play the fastest total.
