How to play Reversi (Othello)
Objective
Have the most discs of your colour on the board when no legal moves remain.
Setup
- An 8×8 board with four discs in the centre — two of each colour, arranged diagonally.
- Black moves first.
Rules
- A legal move places a disc so that it brackets one or more opposing discs in a straight line.
- Every bracketed disc flips to your colour.
- If you have no legal move, you pass.
- The game ends when neither player can move or the board is full.
Strategy tips
- Corners can never be flipped — they're the most valuable squares.
- Avoid the squares diagonally adjacent to corners early on.
- Having fewer discs in the midgame is often good; it means more options later.
