How to play Chess

Objective

Checkmate the opposing King — attack it so that no legal move escapes the threat.

Setup

  • Each side has 8 pawns, 2 rooks, 2 knights, 2 bishops, a queen and a king on an 8×8 board.
  • White moves first.

Rules

  1. Pawns move forward one square (two from their starting rank) and capture diagonally.
  2. Rooks move in straight lines, bishops diagonally, queens both, and knights in an L-shape jumping over pieces.
  3. The king moves one square in any direction and may castle with a rook under specific conditions.
  4. A pawn reaching the far rank promotes, usually to a queen.
  5. Stalemate, threefold repetition and insufficient material are draws.

Strategy tips

  • Control the centre in the opening and develop knights before bishops.
  • Castle early to tuck your king away.
  • Before every move, check what your opponent's last move threatened.
