How to play Chess
Objective
Checkmate the opposing King — attack it so that no legal move escapes the threat.
Setup
- Each side has 8 pawns, 2 rooks, 2 knights, 2 bishops, a queen and a king on an 8×8 board.
- White moves first.
Rules
- Pawns move forward one square (two from their starting rank) and capture diagonally.
- Rooks move in straight lines, bishops diagonally, queens both, and knights in an L-shape jumping over pieces.
- The king moves one square in any direction and may castle with a rook under specific conditions.
- A pawn reaching the far rank promotes, usually to a queen.
- Stalemate, threefold repetition and insufficient material are draws.
Strategy tips
- Control the centre in the opening and develop knights before bishops.
- Castle early to tuck your king away.
- Before every move, check what your opponent's last move threatened.
